5 “Back-to-School” Buys I Have in My Shopping Cart

For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved that back-to-school feeling, or more accurately, back-to-school shopping. Even when I was at primary school, I insisted on getting the polo shirts with the scalloped collar and a pair of Clarks’ finest patent leather Mary Janes. As I entered secondary school, this turned to the shortest polyester-blend skirt I could find (honestly, some things never change). And, I felt genuine excitement at the thought of returning to my West Lancashire comprehensive armed with a River Island tote bag filled with the latest stationery Paperchase had to offer. I think I just love that feeling of being fresh and new.

Despite some trepidation at my imminent return to Manchester to start my final year of my bachelor’s degree, which I wrote about in recent post, “The September Issue”, in the spirit of back-to-school, I’ve been enjoying rejuvenating my wardrobe for the upcoming season. Student or not, there’s no better time to stock up on some fresh pieces and get inspired by the maelstrom of new collections of show season and, of course, fashion week street style. Keep scrolling for five pieces sat in online shopping carts that I’m planning on buying for Autumn.

1. AllSaints Vice Puffer Jacket

AllSaints Vice Puffer Jacket (£210)

Is it raining in Manchester? Probably. It’s a well-known fact that Manchester is one of the UK’s rainiest cities, so a good winter coat is a pretty essential investment and this AllSaints puffer is the perfect way to keep warm and dry while keeping a strong sartorial edge. It has an oversized silhouette, detachable hood and zip details on each shoulder for a deconstructed vibe.

2. Zara Braided Velvet Headband

Zara Braided Velvet Headband (£12.99)

Maybe it’s my near-overwhelming excitement about the Gossip Girl reboot, but I’m simply obsessed with Blair Waldorf-inspired headbands right now. Zara has an incredible selection at the moment, from jewel-encrusted pieces to basic faux leather and satin offerings. This stiff velvet headband with braided detail is the perfect choice to elevate a daytime ensemble.

3. Kimchi Blue Tapestry Babydoll Dress

UO Exclusive Kimchi Blue Tapestry Babydoll Dress ($89)

With Autumn imminent, it’s easy to forget that September days can still be pleasantly warm, in which case, an embroidered babydoll dress paired with a pair of Dr. Martens is a much more suitable look than a winter coat and wool hat. Urban Outfitters’ US website has a far superior selection of clothing than its European counterpart and this dress, complete with a square neckline, puff sleeves and cross-stitch detailing, is well worth the risk of customs charges.

4. Prada Monolith Leather Boots

Prada Exaggerated Tread-sole Leather Ankle Boots (£685)

Just like the waterproof jacket, a pair of leather boots are an essential in a rain-prone city like Manchester. My last pair of Chelsea boots, from a Marks and Spencer collection by Alexa Chung, are nearing their last steps and this pair’s exaggerated lug sole are just perfect for stomping in rain puddles. The Italian-crafted leather and subtle logo debossing at the heal are also stunning.

5. Miaou Mid Rise Plaid Pants

Miaou Mid Rise Red Plaid Pants ($195)

Nothing says Autumn like the return of a classic red plaid to the forefront of my wardrobe. This pair of mid-rise, cropped flare trousers from Miaou have been on my wish list for as long as I can remember. Unfortunately, shipping to the UK is almost as expensive as the trousers themselves, so I’m currently searching Depop for a pair with a 25 inch waist every 2-3 days.
